Why Prepping Your Nails is Important (Don’t Be Lazy, Babe)

Let’s be real! You’ve probably painted your nails straight after a long day without doing much prep and wondered why your mani lasted approximately 3.5 seconds. Especially when you’re out for drinks and a game of pool… yes girl!

B!tch please.

Proper nail prep is the secret sauce between a mani that chips by Wednesday and one that still looks fire after a week. Skipping it is like building a house on sand… it’s not gonna end well.

So, Why Does Prepping Actually Matter?

Prepping your nails creates the perfect smooth, clean, grippy surface so your base coat and polish can actually stick. Without it, you’re basically painting over dirt, old polish and rough edges and then wondering why everything lifts and peels.

Here’s what good prep does:

  • Removes oils, lotion, and old polish residue

  • Smooths out ridges and bumps

  • Gets rid of dead skin and cuticles that love to lift your colour

  • Helps your polish last way longer

How to Prep Your Nails the B!tch Please Way

  1. Remove old polish completely: Use a good remover and make sure there’s zero leftover colour or glitter hiding in the corners.

  2. Wash your hands: Soap and warm water to get rid of any lotion, oils, or dirt. Dry them properly.

  3. File and shape: Gently file your nails into your desired shape. Don’t go too aggressive, you’re not trying to create sandpaper.

  4. Push back cuticles (gently!): Use a cuticle pusher or our favourite tool: the cuticle oil pen after a warm shower when they’re softer.

  5. Lightly buff: A quick, gentle buff with a soft buffer block smooths the surface and helps your base coat grip better. Don’t overdo it.

  6. Clean again: Wipe your nails with nail polish remover or alcohol wipes to remove any dust or oils. This step is crucial.

Pro Tip: Always prep your nails right before applying your base coat. Don’t prep and then go scroll for 30 minutes. The natural oils will come back.

The Results Speak for Themselves

When you prep properly + use our Base Coat + Colour + Top Coat system, your mani goes from “meh, lasted a few days” to “holy shit, it’s still perfect after a week.”

Good prep = longer wear, smoother finish, and fewer meltdowns when your polish starts lifting.

Bottom Line

Don’t be basic. Taking 5–10 minutes to prep your nails properly makes a massive difference. Your polish will look better, last longer, and you’ll actually feel like the bad bitch you are.
